Swimming Course Conversion factors explained

How meet courses and qualifying times should be used and applied.

Meet course first letter  indicates the Designated course (DC) and pool distance namely, L  - Long course 50m; S - Short course 25m; Y  – Yards.  They also used to indicate if course conversions are allowed and how entry times are checked against qualifying times (QT). The table below will comment about each matter. Definitions

Designated qualifying time (DQT).

Designated courses qualifying time (DCQT).

Course

How the entry time is determined.

How qualifying times should be used in conjunction with course.

L

Convert all times to LC

Times are first converted to the designated course (DC) L, S, C. The fastest converted time in the DC is then compared with DQT to check if the entry time qualifies. See example 1

S

Convert all times to SC

Y

Convert all times to Yards

LO

 LC Times only

Only times of the same designated course are allowed as entry times. Times are directly compared with the DQT. No course conversions are allowed.

SO

SC Times only

YO

Yards Times only

YSL

Times selected by course order.
Example: LSY order would be
L - LC, then S - SC then,
 Y-Yards

The fastest time available in each of the courses are first compared to DCQT. Times that qualify are then converted to the DC and the time taken as the entry time corresponded to the course selection order (left). Note one must have at least one time that qualifies See example 2

YLS

LSY

Examples 1:

Suppose the meet has been setup as course S and the following fastest result times are available in each course, step 1.

Steps

2

3

Course

Result times previously swum

Times are converted to S

For a QT of 1:22.00

LC

1:25.25

1:21.80L

Qualifies

SC

1:22.30

1:22.30S

Qualifies

Y

1:23.22

1:23.20Y

Does not!

Note the subscript L, Y, S indicate the original course of the entry time was derived from.

Out of the two remain times in step 3 that qualify the fastest one will be used as the entry time, namely LC time of 1:21.80

Example 2:

Suppose the meet has been setup as course LSY and the following fastest result times are available in each course, step 1.

Courses QT Times

For each course and QT

Times are converted to L

LC

1:25.25

1:25.55

Qualifies

1:25.25L

SC

1:22.30

1:21.00

Does not!

-

Y

1:23.22

1:24.12

Qualifies

1:24.20y

Note the subscript L, Y, S indicate the original course of the entry time was derived from.

The entry time that will be used from step 4 from the times that have qualified will be selected with a preference order of meet course LSY,1st Long, 2nd short, 3rd yards.

So for LSY, entry time of 1:25.25L
if it was YLS, entry time of 1:24.20y
if it was SYL, entry time of 1:24.20y
